At dinner tonight we somehow got on the subject of the astronaut food. Oh, yeah, now I remember how, DD was talking about eating MRE's in the Army. Then he got into a discussion about the difference between MRE's and C-rations. Yes, we have stimulating dinner conversations.
So we got to talking about instant coffee...Q thought that was pretty gross. It is pretty yucky when you think about it. I don't think I ever had a cup of it myself. I do remember that powdered tea though...Nestea? I think that was the name of it. You just stir it into a glass of water. Did you ever have any of that? I know I had some of that growing up.
This segwayed into Tang, which moved onto astronaut food. Did you ever eat any of those space bars?
There were chocolate and peanut butter flavors. I can still recall the taste just thinking about them. It was so cool that you got two in a package. My mom would let us eat them, even chocolate ones! And it was so cool that we were eating what the astronauts on the moon were eating!
As a kid, I had always thought we were special and got to eat them because we lived in Florida and lived so close to Cape Canaveral. My bubble burst tonight when I found out that DD ate them too as a kid, and he lived across the country! Apparently all children had access to this special astronaut food, not just those of us growing up in Florida.
So I hopped onto google to try and remember the name of them. They were called Space Food Sticks. And I drank them with a glass of Tang of course! I found a site that sells them by the box. It's called Funky Food Shop. For only $28 plus shipping you can walk down memory lane. Apparently they are new, not just left over and found in a bomb shelter somewhere.
