Most people don't know what can be found in the farthest northwest corners of northern California. It is a place that is easily forgotten by those that live in the hustle and bustle of the rest of the state. Jeez, I think the governors even forget it's there...full of living, breathing, voting, people.
Humboldt County has quite the reputation. People are considered behind the times because life goes at a different pace. It's very wet and foggy there...with upwards of 40 inches of rain in an average year. The main cash crop is not exactly one that they brag about. One of the top three industries is welfare. People have actually come there from other states to collect the higher than average benefits. (I'm hoping that has improved) Many children grow up and move away because there just aren't jobs to be had...well that pay a livable, home-buying wage anyway.
But it's beautiful there. The Redwoods are amazing. It's always nice to come to Humboldt and see green in the summer, when the rest of the state is brown and crispy. The water is chilly, the air is cool, but the beaches are long and full of treasures to be found. Best of all they don't have the globs of oil on them that so many other beaches have down south...so walking barefoot is something you can still do without a worry.
We miss living there...our friends and it's year round beauty. (We don't miss the rain and the economy) But it is so much fun to see what makes its way out and what chooses to stay behind the Redwood Curtain. There is a lot of talent up there. Maybe it's because everyone is used to making the most out of little, or it's the long rainy days and finding creativity from within...but if you look closely, Humboldt is a treasure box full of jewels to be admired. Not all of it is music...but it is a good share of the treasure box!
So here is a taste of what you can discover....
I just discovered this one myself... Ryan Bisio is the very talented son of a friend.
Mike Craghead hasn't left Humboldt...but you can catch him playing around town. He's an amazing musician and songwriter that is passing his talents on to his children as well!
Here is one of my second graders! I'm a proud teacher...can't say I helped with his musical talents, just his reading, math and spelling! LOL
This one you are sure to recognize! My girls love her music (so do we) and it's not just because they grew up with her family...she has an amazing voice!
