Chiefs Home Opener!

We went to the Spokane Chief's home opener game tonight!!

 

It was a great game!  They beat the Tri-City Americans 4-0.  Before the game started they celebrated the hanging of the Memorial Cup Championship banner.  Some of our favorite players are still at NHL and AHL training camps...but the boys that were there did an awesome job!

Paul Newman passes

Well, another iconic actor has passed away.  Paul Newman died today at 83 from cancer.  He is class.  In Hollywood today, with all the actor antics splashed across the tabloids, it is rare to find an actor that displays such honorable character. 

He was married to the same woman, Joanne Woodward, for over 50 years!  That should earn him a statue in Hollywood.  In a town where marriages are like revolving doors, vows are merely suggestions, and marriage certificates are made of recyclable paper, Paul was asked by a reporter if he was ever tempted to "wander" from his wife.  This is what he said:

"I have steak at home, why would I go out for hamburger?"

The Great Bailout?

I just saw President Bush's update on the talk.   You really think one week is going to create a bailout for a situation that has evolved over years?  Is it because our economy is on the edge of the cliff that President Bush thinks that these political parties, who have not come together in many years, for the longterm good of our country.  DC is a huge narcissistic pool of people.  They are NOT there serving the common public.  They are there serving those with the most money and the biggest political pull.

Nancy Pelosi?  What is up with this woman.  She smiles like she is on medication.  She doesn't look like a serious leader.  How in the world did she get the Speaker of the House position?  I can see how she has such a low popularity rating.  I wonder which part of the country blessed us with this woman?!

Of course, when asked about the presidential candidates taking part in the DC economy talks, the Democratic senator interviewed said that McCain rambled on and on.  (If you heard this fellow speak...he had trouble rambling through the answer to the reporters question!)

The Republican senator interviewed said that Obama said a lot of nothing.  I happened to hear some of what he said...and it was a lot of..."I-have-a-future-as-a-college-professor puffiness...no meat, no solutions, just blame.

What both of these Senators (Obama and McCain) need to be doing right now is not sitting in on the meetings muddying up the waters, but instead throwing their clout around DC and getting the parties together to vote quickly on whatever solution comes out of the meetings.  No bickering, no debating, no trying to tag on meaningless clauses and stipulations.

Premier Thursday

Oh man!  Tonight was torture...Premiers of both the shows I make a point of watching each week.  Survivor and Grey's Anatomy.  And of course their special 2 hour premiers overlapped!  No DVR's in our house but we have one of those old fashioned vcrs.  Remember those?

I have to say, the two people voted out during the 2 hour show...were two of the three that I enjoyed seeing go!  Hopefully the third one goes next week.  The team split was a bad one.  So the teams are lop-sided. 

Now I haven't watched the premier of Greys Anatomy yet.  I will have to catch up some time this weekend.  I think it will be the make or break for me.  Last season wasn't that good.  The series has been going down hill since the drowning/death/resurrection of Meredith and the failed wedding of Christina.  Last season I only watched about half the episodes.

Delay the Debate or not to Delay

Many are shocked that McCain wants to postpone the debate this Friday.  I'm not amazed, astonished or disappointed.  I am pleased.  Pleased to see that McCain understands that Americans comes first.  Our country needs him to do the job that he is already elected and paid to do.  Biden and Obama are also paid to do this real job right now in the senate!  This is their opportunity to show true leadership and support of the government and our country.

The campaigning for this next presidency has lasted years...literally years!  There is still plenty of time to debate.  Obama acts like a child.   He won't debate and won't debate and then when a debate finally comes up, and McCain says lets move it a week, he puts his foot down and says he will only debate on Friday.  What sort of flexibility is this showing for a possible future president? 

You have to wonder if it had been Obama's idea to postpone the debate...would it be playing out differently?

A Moment Can Age You!

I was watching the news this morning and a commercial came on tv that caught my eye.  The band Foreigner is playing a concert this Friday at the Northern Quest Casino.  Yet another band from my youth makes the rounds through the Spokane area.  Warm high school memories flashed through my mind.

 

Then I looked closely at the ad....the concert is sponsored by AARP!

But I was messing with my adobe photoshop this morning.  Yeah, like I don't have 3 other things that I need to be doing...but the idea popped into my head and wouldn't let go until I did something about it. 

Have you been listening to the candidates talk about the state of the economy?  McCain has a 6 point plan and Obama has a 7 point plan to improve the economy.  One more point makes it so much better I guess.  Maybe Ralph Nader should come up with an 8 point plan rather than dressing up like a Panda Bear.  Have you seen his commercial?

Has anyone else noticed that it's not always a plan a candidate has that improves the economy, but the change in administration that tends to do it. 

I have heard that Obama's solution is to raise taxes.  Granted he isn't planning to raise the taxes for our income level (thank heavens for small miracles).  He is planning to tax the rich...and give to the poor.  This pretty much bypasses those of us in the working class group, but it also sounds like the line from a very famous storybook character.....

Did his mom read him the Robin Hood stories once too  many times as a child?  I'm surprised that I haven't seen anything comparing him to Robin Hood in the press!  Must be because the press just loves him like he's Brittney or Brangelina.  

Be careful Mr. Obama, if you don't win this election, the media you have in your palm right now are a fickle bunch.  If you lose, I'm sure we'll be seeing headlines in the tabloids that he and Michelle are divorcing...or that he has an illegitimate child...or his half brothers in Africa are starving on their $5 a month income.

First Day Of Autumn

The signs are all around.  It's fall.  Well, it actually starts tomorrow, but the weather changed dramatically this weekend.  It was 85 on Friday and everyone was in shorts.  By Sunday morning it's raining and 60 degrees and everyone is in shorts....the hardcore that refuse to believe that summer is over!  I was in jeans and fleece myself and threw the flipflops to the back of the closet.

This one is in our back yard.  It's our favorite.  If we move, we will definitely plant another one.

Our grape vine hit three years this summer.  The apparent magic number for grapes vines to actually grow grapes.  We aren't sure if they are going to turn sweet or not.  They are still sour...are they going to turn purple?  No idea...watch and taste...wonder if the deer like grapes?  We'll see.

 Along with our Harvest Moon, we always have amazing sunsets this time of year too.  No, I didn't play with the color...this is how red it got.  The light shining in our window turned our living room red!

 

Then there is the woodstove.  This is the first night we started a fire.  We were gone all day...church then Linner with some friends up north...by the time we got home the house was damp and chilly.  So, whipped up a little fire to take the chill off.  And Q made some chocolate chip cookies.  Perfect evening!
